2003 Richardson Trophy

Richardson Trophy Match Racing Championships

Port Huron Yacht Club & Sarnia Yacht Club

September 13-14, 2003


I. Organizing Authority

II. Venue

  1. Racing will take place on Lake Huron near Sarnia Yacht Club.
  2. Sailing will be in Canadian waters and shore events will be in both Canada (SYC) and United States (PHYC). All competitors must have required identification to meet the current requirements of both Canadian and U.S. Customs and Immigration authorities.

III. The Provisional Program is:

  1. The regatta office located at SYC opens at noon on Friday September 12th 2003.


  2. Registration will be from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. on September 12th and 08:00 to 09:00 a.m. on September 13 at the regatta office.


  3. The first briefing, boat draw, and meeting with the umpires will be at 08:30 a.m. September 13 at the regatta office.


  4. Racing will be Saturday 13 and Sunday 14, 2003


  5. The time of the first race each day will be 10:00 a.m.

IV. Skippers eligibility

  1. In compliance with the Richardson Trophy Deed of Gift (1967) each association, in good standing, of the YRUGL may select a skipper who regularly resides in its area and is a member of any yacht club which is a member of such association. The selection process shall use such standards as reasonable to select a skipper who has demonstrated championship ability preceding the races in which he/she may compete. Such skipper may select as crew only members who regularly reside in the area of such association or who have regularly crewed for the skipper in the preceding year.


  2. The designated skipper shall helm the yacht at all times while racing, except in an emergency.

V. Dates and Fees

  1. The skipper shall be entered on completion of registration, and the payment of all fees and deposits.


  2. ENTRY FEE:   A non-refundable entry fee of $400.00 (US) shall be paid at registration.


  3. DAMAGE DEPOSIT:   An initial damage deposit of $500.00 (US) shall be paid at registration, unless extended by the authorizing authority. The deposit is the maximum payable by the skipper as the result of any one incident. Any remaining deposit after the event will be refunded by September 30, 2003. In the event that the organizing authority decides after a deduction from the damage deposit it may require that the deposit be restored to its original amount before the skipper will be permitted to continue in the event.

VI. Rules

  1. This regatta will be governed by the "rules" as defined in the Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS), 2001-2004, including Appendix C and Appendix K; addendum B, the prescriptions of the USSA, the Richardson Trophy amended Deed of Gift (1967), the Notice of Race, including amendments, the rules for handling of boats, and the Sailing Instructions.


  2. This is a category A event.


  3. A jury will be appointed in accordance with RRS - Appendix M1.1 and RRS - 89 (b).

VII. Boats and Sails

  1. The event will be sailed in S2-7.9 sailboats.


  2. Boats will be provided.


  3. The following sails will be provided for each boat: mainsail, jib, and spinnaker.


  4. Boats will be assigned by a draw based on the schedule as provided at the first briefing.

VIII. Crew (including skipper)

  1. All registered crew shall sail all races.


  2. The total crew, including the skipper, shall be five.

IX. Event Format

  1. The event will consist of races determined by draw at the briefing.


  2. The organizing committee may vary the format, terminate or eliminate any round, when conditions do not permit the completion of the intended format or when a clear winner has been determined.

X. Course

  1. The course will be windward/leeward twice around with starboard roundings, finishing downwind.

XI. Prizes

  1. The winner of the championship will be awarded the Richardson Trophy.

XII. Media, Images and Sound

  1. The organizing authority shall have the right to use any image and sound recorded during the event free of any charge.

XIII. Disclaimer

  1. All those taking part in the regatta do so at their own risk and responsibility. The LHYA, PHYC, SYC, and any and all sponsors disclaim any and every responsibility for loss, damage, injury or inconvenience that might occur to persons and things, both ashore and on the water, as a consequence of participation in any way in the races.


  2. The attention of competitors is particularly drawn to the whole of RRS Fundamental Rule 4.
